WUF Session: Stakeholder Roundtable on Older Persons

February 8, 2020 - February 13, 2020

The Public Space Research Group has been invited to participate in this session of the World Urban Forum 10, taking place in Abu Dhabi. Note: exact time/date/location and more information will be posted soon.

Currently, 8.5% of the current global population is over 65 and it is predicted that by 2050 there will be more over-65s than children under 15. As such, it is clear that older persons must be a major stakeholder group in achieving sustainable urban development. Ageing populations are currently a major demographic reality in high income countries, and increasingly becoming one in low and middle income countries. Older persons face unique
barriers to mobility, access to public space and participation in governance. As well, they offer real opportunities to contribute to their communities – financially and socially.

Cities are known to be places where people come together to live, work and find opportunities. In the face of rapid urbanisation, governments are facing increasing challenges in providing equal access to rights and basic services for all, particularly those considered older populations, has proved challenging. As cities’ housing market is under pressure, the less resilient citizens will struggle. These limitations are exacerbated by the limited role and resources of city authorities to enact effective inclusion of older persons. In cities, a majority of older persons suffer major disparities on all measurable accounts such as low wages; poor health; and poor housing conditions. Ageing groups are the most susceptible to homelessness, usually due to a lack of integration into society (social interaction, labour market etc.) and the inaccessibility of secure, adequate and affordable housing.
